Information and Media Minister Anurag Thakur informed the Lok Sabha that the central government’s social media accounts have been hacked during the last five years. In response to a question about government Twitter handles and e-mail accounts being hacked. Over 600 social media accounts of the central government were hacked.
According to Anurag Thakur, Union Minister of Information and Culture. A total of 175, 114, 61, 77, 186, and 28 websites, emails, and social media accounts were hacked in the years 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 (up to February), accordingly.
Sectoral Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CERT-In)
In response to a question on what steps the government is taking to avoid future intrusions. It regularly releases alerts and advisories regarding the most recent cyber risks. Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), according to Thakur (MeitY).
“CERT-In has issued 68 alerts for data security and fraud mitigation for organizations and users.”
In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, the Minister stated, “CERT-In coordinates incident response procedures with businesses, service providers, sectoral Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs). Law Enforcement Agencies.” According to Thakur, the government has taken some steps to improve cyber security and avoid cyber-attacks.
“When CERT-In detects a compromise of a website, e-mail account. Also, the Twitter account notifies the impacted entities and recommends remedial activities.” “CERT-In coordinates incident response procedures with affected companies, and service providers. Sectoral Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs), and Law Enforcement Agencies,” according to the ministry.
He stated that all government websites and applications are subjected to a cyber security audit before being hosted. Following the hosting, auditing is done regularly.
CERT-In runs an automated cyber threat exchange platform that collects, analyzes, and shares customized alerts with organizations across industries so that they can take proactive threat mitigation measures. He said, allowing people to secure their desktops, and mobile/smartphones, and avoid phishing attempts.
