‘Plucky underdogs’ take on hit titles at the Bafta Games Awards 2022. At the Bafta Games Awards later this year, popular games like Forza Horizon 5. Call of Duty and Fortnite will compete for awards.

“It’s very nice that Bafta. Which is known for the splendor of film and television, promotes all facets of gaming,” said Jon Ingold, co-creator of Overboard! His game is one of six that have been listed for the best British gaming award. Returns and It Takes Two are the most nominated Bafta games.

Overboard! is a reimagining of an Agatha Christie mystery. “Games are far more than Grand Theft Auto or whatever the big release of the year is,” Ingold added.

“I still believe that games are viewed as a secondary form of media by many people. But there are a lot of good things out there.” It’s such a diverse space, and many people outside of games are unaware of it.

“One of the things the Baftas can truly do is illustrate. How diverse games have evolved over the previous 10 or 15 years,” says the director.

It Takes Two, is a social puzzle game, and dark psychological horror. This year, Returnal took the lead in terms of the total number of votes.

Ingold said the award “feels extraordinary” and that voters at the Baftas were “ready to look at games outside of the usual popular releases.”

“Big games have a lot of money behind them [for] research and marketing,” he remarked. Trying to get people to realize your game exists is the most difficult challenge for a small team. “I like the fact that we’re on the Bafta stage with some big titles with millions of dollars behind them,” she says. I enjoy being the brave underdog.”

The best British game category

Overkill is up against Alba. A Wildlife Adventure, Fights in Tight Spaces, Sable, Forza Horizon 5, and Death’s Door. One of the minds behind Death’s Door, in which you play as a sword-wielding black crow. He explained, “It’s just so competitive.”

“To be in a situation where people are talking about you during all these major games is the perfect scenario.”

The Baftas are ‘seriously considered.’

Because the last two awards were virtual, there’s an extra degree of anticipation for this year’s festivities.

The crew values Bafta recognition, according to Fenn. “It’s difficult to convey to your parents, who may not be familiar with the games industry. How huge a deal it is to get a nine out of ten for your game from a gaming website like IGN,” he said.

“It’s taken seriously, and it has that kind of clout, which is always excellent for the games business in terms of mainstreaming it and making it less of a quirky hobby.”
